Was verbirgt sich hinter dem Phänomen “Dancehall Queen”?
“Einfach ausgedrückt die Königin der Tanzhalle! Eine Dancehall Queen ist Teil der jamaikanischen Dancehall-Kultur. Sie verkörpert Vibe, Rhythmus und den jamaikanischen Style der Dancehall. Entstanden ist das Phänomen aus der Rivalität jamaikanischer Frauen, die auf jedem Dance um Gunst des Publikums lechzen. Daraus entwickelten sich promotete Wettbewerbe, die sogenannten Dancehall Queen Contests. So wurde 1991 die erste jamaikanische Dancehall Queen, Carlene Smith gekrönt. Fünf Jahre später fand in Montego Bay der erste „International Dancehall Queen Contest“ statt. Zu dem nun jährlich Dancehall Queens der ganzen Welt strömen und um sich den Titel zu holen.”

Was macht eine Dancehall Queen aus?
“It’s all about the attitude! Es ist mehr als sich gekonnt zu den Rhythmen des Dancehalls zu bewegen. Zu einer Dancehall Queen gehören Attitude, Style und Outfit. Es ist vor allem Entertainment der sensationslustigen Party-Crowd. Sie dürfen sich ansehen, welche der Queens am besten bubbled, shaked und wined. Typische Bewegungen sind der Dutty Wine, Hot Fuck, Butterfly oder Back it up. Hinzu kommen Akrobatik, wie zum Beispiel Kopfstand und Spagat, aber auch halsbrecherische Stunts. Es kommt vor, dass die Tänzerinnen auf Boxen, Bäume oder Sonstiges klettern und davon auch herunterspringen.”

 

Gal a bubble - Konshens

Neben den Dancehall Queens gibt es in der jamaikanischen Dancehall auch viele TänzerINNEN. Sie vermischen Elemente des Hip Hop, Breakdance und Jazz zu einer Art Jamaican Streetdance, welche mit einer Portion jamaikanischen „Swagger“ versehen werden. Berühmt Tanzschritte sind zum Beispiel Skip to my lou, Willie Bounce, Pon di River, Sweep und und und … (für mehr Infos www.danceja.com). Der Unterschied zu einer Dancehall Queen liegt darin, dass es bei einer Dancehall Queen prinzipiell um das Gesamtkonzept „Expression von Weiblichkeit“ handelt und bei den Jamaican Dances mehr um Spaß und Miteinander Tanzen. Natürlich gibt es heute eine Mischung aus Beidem.”

WATCH MI STEP präsentiert den DITILLERY Dance-Workshop "SOCA-EDITION" mit ISIgal am 10. Februar 2010.



Wir legen die Jamaican Steps mal bei Seite und bewegen uns in Richtung Trinidad & Tobago ... It's carnival season in Trinidad & Tobago und wir möchten euch das Caribbean carnival feeling ein bisschen näher bringen.

Der Workshop ist geeignet für alle Tanzlevel und für Frauen und Männer! Schließlich macht es zusammen mehr Spaß ;) Wir werden aktuelle Tunes dieser Saison und die Hits der letzten Jahre kennenlernen. Dazu werdet ihr ein paar einfach Tanzbasics erlernen. Noch mehr als beim Dancehall geht beim Soca um Spaß, Freude und Tanzen!

Der Workshop startet 20:00 Uhr und ist wie gewohnt kostenlos. Das Ende wird ca. 22:00 Uhr sein. Perfekt um nach einer kleinen Erholungspause gleich in die Party zu starten, die an diesem Abend in der Distillery stattfindet.
